Electrical & Computer Engineering Seminar

Dr. Sumit Paudyal, Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Florida International University

Will present a talk entitled:

“Efficient Distribution Grid Optimal Power Flow Methods in

Aggregating Distributed and Flexible Loads for Grid Services”

Abstract: One  of  the  major  challenges  in  current  distribution management system (DMS)  tools  is the  scalability  of  solution  algorithms  in  solving  distribution  optimal  power  flow  (DOPF)  model for large scale three‐phase unbalanced distribution grids. In distribution grid with active nodes, such as PV and storage devices, the computational challenges further increases with the increased number of control variables. The solution to DOPF model becomes computationally challenging with the nonlinearity (due to power flow and load models) and integer variables (due to load tap changers, switches, capacitor banks, etc.). DOPF model serves as base in the DMS tools for solving several control problems in distribution grid such as volt/var optimization, feeder reconfiguration, reactive power management, etc. The conventional mixed integer non‐linear programming (MINLP) formulation of DOPF does not scale up for large grids. In this seminar, a mixed integer second order cone programming (MISOCP) and Linearized versions of DOPF models are explored, which show better computational tractability than MINLP counterpart.
