Introducing AppsAnywhere

Coming Fall 2021

Students, faculty and staff can anticipate a new software experience in Clarkson computer labs and classrooms.

New Service Delivery Model

Software applications will be hosted in the cloud and available through a new service called AppsAnywhere. Similar to popular services available elsewhere like the App Store on your phone, and Netflix on your TV, AppsAnywhere is Clarkson’s online store for software commonly used in academic and research settings such as MATLAB, AutoCAD, SPSS and more.

Benefits

The move marks the beginning for increased utilization of licenced software and greater inclusion of Clarkson users as AppsAnywhere will soon make software accessible to users on any computer on and off campus. This will come as the project moves into phase two slated for later this year.

Phase one, which streams licenced software from the cloud to all Clarkson owned lab and classroom personal computers, includes a departure from the previous software distribution model, which installed software on individual computers. The new model lowers hardware costs, and improves service by reducing response times as applications are distributed and managed virtually. A few exceptions, including Microsoft Office 365 and PDF Reader, will continue to be installed on the local computer.

Impact

Computer users will look for the AppsAnywhere icon on the desktop each time they wish to access the desired application from a classroom or lab computer. Initial launches will require a brief initialization; repeat use of the same application will launch right away. Access permissions are driven by licence terms. Users should check with the IT HelpDesk if they have access questions.

Invitation to Try AppsAnywhere

AppsAnywhere is now available on computers in CAMP 171A (near OIT CAMP Satellite Office). Software is coming online to AppsAnywhere now until August 1, 2021. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by CAMP 171A to trial software available now through AppsAnywhere.
