Clarkson researchers study how feeding seaweed to cows reduces methane from burps

Clarkson faculty Drs. Shane Rogers (PI), Stefan Grimberg (co-PI) and Susan Powers (co-PI) are part of a large multi-institution research team that recently received $15M to study how to grow kelp or other seaweeds in an economically and environmentally sustainable way to create a feed supplement to reduce burping of methane in dairy cows. The Clarkson team will include lab to pilot scale experiments utilizing anaerobic digestion in the system and a lifecycle assessment to confirm that the new system is energetically more favorable than current systems with a net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.  Bigelow labs (Maine), Colby College, UNH, UVM, Syracuse U and the Miner Institute are among the research partners.
