Welcome to the September edition of the STEM LEAF/ADVANCE Newsletter!
Clarkson’s NSF ADVANCE grant is designed
1) to effect positive institutional change around reduction of implicit or unintentional bias associated with gender and intersectional issues of race, ethnicity, country of origin, sexual orientation, and disability,
2) to systematically and equitably support the development of inclusive leadership skills and the professional advancement of women STEM faculty, and
3) to implement sustainable, systematic changes across the University in support of these goals.
Completion of the following MOOC can be utilized in your FAR – it can both fulfill training requirements and show growth in your teaching development! Also if you participate it can be used to fulfill both of your annual DEI training requirements. (Please just email for how to be counted!)
Inclusive STEM Teaching Project Six-Week MOOC
The Inclusive STEM Teaching Project, a NSF Improving Undergraduate STEM Education program, is hosting a six-week Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from October 3 – November 22, 2022 via edX. Join a community of nearly 6,000 faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and staff, and learn how to:
- Advance your awareness, self-efficacy, and ability to cultivate inclusive classroom environments;
- Support your development as a reflective, inclusive practitioner;
- Engage in reflection and discussion around topics of equity and inclusion across a variety of institutional contexts;
- Implement inclusive teaching methods in your classes which will remove common barriers and enhance learning in STEM for all students.

“Supporting women’s research in predominantly undergraduate institutions: Experiences with a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award” in Frontiers by V. Rabinowitz and V. Valian
“This paper describes the Gender Equity Project (GEP) at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY), funded by the U. S. NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award (ITA) program. ADVANCE supports system-level strategies to promote gender equity in the social and natural sciences, but has supported very few teaching-intensive institutions. Hunter College is a teaching-intensive institution in which research productivity among faculty is highly valued and counts toward tenure and promotion. We created the GEP to address the particular challenges that faculty, especially White women and faculty of color, face in maintaining research programs and advancing in their careers at teaching-intensive institutions.”
