What we’re doing to counteract the effects of Canada’s wildfires on indoor air quality

There have been several inquiries into what Clarkson has done to minimize the effects of the Canadian wildfires as it pertains to indoor air quality. After reviewing the recommendations by the EPA we have been able to establish the following.

During the pandemic, the university went through and replaced traditional low efficiency filters with higher efficiency filters on primary air handlers (MERV 13).  The Facilities team had continued this practice even after COVID requirements were relaxed. This was an important wildfire recommendation by the EPA.

Additionally, the EPA recommendation to minimize the introduction of smoke into building envelopes was greatly influenced by forcing our air handler controls to operate in winter mode. This practice allows us to minimize the introduction of outside air but still provide ample circulation for the reduced occupancies currently on the campus.

Masks are available outside the Campus Safety & Security office in the ERC for anyone who would like one.
