This informational meeting will focus on Major Scholarships and Fellowships (including Goldwater, NSF GRFP, DoD SMART, Fulbright, Rhodes, and others). You should come if:
- You are a sophomore or junior interested in undergraduate fellowships (e.g. Goldwater)
- You are a senior wishing to fund your graduate degree (e.g. NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program)
- You are a senior wishing to fund an international research project/study or international teaching assistantship (e.g. Fulbright)
- You are a first-year graduate student interested in funding your degree (e.g. NSF GRFP)
- You are an undergraduate student (including first-years!) interested in learning more about preparing yourself for these opportunities, and how to apply
Please note that Fellowships/Scholarships are highly competitive, and require a high GPA. Many also prefer students with research experience as well as other academic, leadership and service activities. Most of these fellowships require institutional nomination and the Honors Program staff would be pleased to help you with this process.
Qualified under-represented students are especially encouraged to attend.
A brief description of some of these awards follows:
GOLDWATER– The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduates (sophomores/juniors) in STEM fields who intend to pursue a research career. Clarkson has an excellent track record with the Goldwater- 38 students have won the award including at least one in the last 19 consecutive years.
NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)– This fellowship grants up to 3 years of support for graduate study in STEM fields.
DoD Science, Mathematics, & Research for Transformation (SMART)- Provides full funding for STEM students and includes Department of Defense internships and post-graduate placement.
FULBRIGHT– The Fulbright US Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistantships in foreign countries. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction with the community. Benefits include round-trip transportation to the host country, funding to cover room, board, and incidental costs, and Accident & Sickness Health Benefits.
RHODES– The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship in the world. Rhodes Scholars are chosen for their outstanding scholarly achievements, character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their leadership potential. Benefits- all expenses paid for 2-3 years of study at the University of Oxford in England. In some instances, funding may be extended to a fourth year of study.
The Honors Program will sponsor a fall Fellowship Preparation Workshop series. Please see attached for the schedule of events.
