On Tuesday September 19th, 2023, Bioethics Department adjunct faculty Lori Bruce’s research was highlighted on the NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt as the first national story on unconsented pelvic exams by medical students. Twenty states have passed legislation to require explicit consent and others are considering.
Lori’s work is the only known analysis of the frequency of these exams, and her results were distributed to Connecticut lawmakers at a critical moment in their decision-making, contributing to the bill’s passage.
Lori is the Associate Director at Yale University’s Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics and the Founder and Chair of the Community Bioethics Forum at Yale School of Medicine. She directs the annual Summer Institute in Bioethics at Yale and her latest research relates to the ethics of psychedelics, which she just presented at Oxford University. Lori received her M.S. in Bioethics from Clarkson in 2019.
