Clarkson Professor Receives Grant for Collaborative Project with the University of Wyoming

The Dassault Systèmes U.S. Foundation has awarded Dr. Pat Piperni, Associate Professor in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Clarkson University, a grant in collaboration with the University of Wyoming. The main objective of the project is to train students to participate in collaborative projects involving challenging engineering design problems.

With this project, Clarkson and the University of Wyoming propose to set up a collaborative design framework to enable the design of advanced aircraft concepts involving students from both universities. Clarkson’s Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) Lab environment will be linked with the University of Wyoming’s aircraft aerostructural analysis and design tools, both of which will be enhanced to enable their integration into a joint design framework. This integration will be instrumental in fostering opportunities for further collaboration in the future.

This project will prepare students to work in a multi-team, multi-site design environment. Students will interact with peers and faculty of diverse backgrounds and expertise while gaining valuable design experience and skill sets that will be in high demand in the future.

This is Piperni’s second grant from the Dassault Systèmes U.S. Foundation. He was awarded his first grant in December of 2017 for the establishment of his MDO lab, which was completed in February of this year.
