Ioannis Mastorakos, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the Coulter School of Engineering at Clarkson, and his co-authors, recently published a new e-book on composite materials.
The book, called Composite Materials: Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials and Application (The Minerals, Metals & Materials Series) was published earlier this month. The collection covers innovations in composite materials with a specific focus on eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable systems. All composite fields are explored, including polymer, metal, and ceramic matrix composites with an emphasis on sourcing raw materials in a sustainable way as well as the development of composite materials for environmental sustainability. Topics include developing new materials for structural applications, reducing energy consumption, and increasing component life along with discussions of novel methods to reuse existing materials. Additional topics include naturally sourced materials feedstock, recycled material feedstock, application of composite for reduced carbon footprint, and the development of novel materials to repurpose waste from other areas.

Mastorakos came to Clarkson in 2014. His current research focuses on the mechanical properties and applications of nanoscale composite nano foams, and on the deformation behavior of High Entropy Alloys.
