Two to Receive Honorary Degrees at Clarkson University in May

Dorr B. Begnal ’83, a co-founder and managing director of Winthrop Square Capital (WSC) and co-founder of Park Street Capital (PSC), and Gregory Verdine, the Evring Professor of Chemistry at Harvard University and Harvard Medical School, and president and CEO of FOG Pharmaceuticals and LifeMine Therapeutics, will be awarded honorary degrees by Clarkson University in May.

Dorr Begnal isa seasoned private markets investor, and company co-founder and managing director. He has a variety of experience in venture capital, investments, growth equity, and buyouts. Begnal has co-founded two investment management firms, including Park Street Capital, an independent, employee-owned investment management firm. He helped raise and invest capital for 11 funds-of-funds partnerships totaling approximately $3 billion. Begnal has served on Clarkson’s board of trustees and sits on the boards of several other non-profits, including Farm Sanctuary and Father Flanagan’s Fund for Needy Children.

An award-winning university educator, Gregory Verdine, Ph.D., is also a pioneering scientist and innovator, life science entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and successful biotech company-builder. Verdine is the originator of STEMgenesis, a new model for fostering community economic growth through the convergence of philanthropy, workforce development, and institution creation. His distinguished academic career has spanned three decades at Harvard University and Harvard Medical School. Verdine founded two fields of sciences that meld basic research and new medicines discovery. In his academic research, he has invented a powerful new class of therapeutics which enable intervention into diseases previously considered “undruggable.” Verdine is also responsible for the creation of ten biotechnology companies.

Begnal and Verdine will be awarded their degrees and speak during undergraduate commencement exercises on Clarkson’s main campus in Potsdam on May 11.

Clarkson seeks honorary degree nominations from the greater Clarkson Community to recognize individuals who have made outstanding achievements and contributions to an academic discipline or to society through their body of work, either through sustained efforts over a period of time, or as evidenced by one or more significant accomplishments.
