Involvement in Student Organizations and Poster Policy Reminder

We hope you are exploring the many ways to be engaged in the Clarkson community, including attending campus events and participating in student organizations. Joining a student organization is a great way to meet new people, explore your interests, and enhance your leadership skills. Knight Life provides a comprehensive list of Clarkson University student organizations. You can easily search organizations by category and make contact with representatives directly through the Knight Life website.

A common way for organizations to market their events is through posters on physical and electronic bulletin boards across campus. In addition to Knight Life, be sure to check out the many bulletin boards around campus to see the latest involvement opportunities!

As a reminder, organization advertisements are expected to adhere to the University’s Poster Policy, which can be found under IX-DD. Poster Policy the Student Regulations

IX-DD. Poster Policy

Once an organization is registered with the Office of Student Life, it then has the right to post information regarding meetings and events.

Bulletin boards are available for marketing and advertising University and organization events.

Posted materials which do not comply with the following requirements will be immediately removed and discarded:

a.    All advertisements must include the name of the individual or recognized sponsoring group.

b.    All advertisements must be removed within 48 hours after the event.

c.    Paper advertisements must be affixed to bulletin boards. They are not permitted on walls, windows, elevators, floors, signposts, parked cars, vending machines, building exteriors, or any other surface which violates fire code.

d.    One flier/poster per bulletin board is permitted. Posters/fliers cannot cover or obstruct another organization’s promotion.

e.    Posters may not be posted on department, faculty, or staff office bulletin boards without the permission of the department, faculty, or staff member.

f.     Advertisements cannot be larger than 11″ by 17″ without the approval of the Office of Student Life.

g.    Postings in residence halls are at the discretion of Residence Life employees.

h.    All requests for the posting of non-University business (car sales, rentals, etc.) must be emailed to postings@clarkson.edu.

i.      Posters advertising events with alcohol must go through approval with the Office of Student Life and must adhere to the Events with Alcohol Policy (IX-A).

j.      Political Campaigns:  Per Federal and NYS regulations, University resources, property and facilities including but not limited to photo copiers, bulletin boards, digital emails, Zoom accounts, fliers, and social media accounts affiliated with the University cannot be used to fundraise or advocate for a particular candidate running for political office or how to vote on propositions appearing on a ballot. This includes no links to web or other digital linkages to organizations that fundraise or advocate for a single candidate or political party. See IX-FF. k.    The use of images, logos, and other materials that were not created by an individual in the group must also adhere to the University’s Copyright Policy.

l.      Postings are prohibited from advertising illegal activities.

m.  Posters should be hung using painter’s tape or magnets to avoid damage to University property.

People taking offense to the language or nature of any poster, flier, or banner may not remove any posted material when it complies with this policy. Instead, individuals are encouraged to contact the event organizers. It is not the intent or responsibility of the University to censor information.

While we have 205 incredible student organizations, it is important to note that there are several groups operating in the local community which were previously recognized by either Clarkson University or SUNY Potsdam. These organizations have committed severe or repeated violations of University policy or law that have posed a significant threat to student health and safety. Due to the heightened concern for students, it is against University policy to engage in recruitment or initiation activities with, become a member of, perpetuate, or otherwise engage in activities as an actual or prospective member of these groups. Students who violate this policy are subject to the disciplinary process as described in the Student Regulations, including but not limited to probation, suspension, or expulsion.
