October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we can protect ourselves and our data in an increasingly digital world.
Clarkson community members will note this and several more one-liners on campus digital signage this October in honor of Cyber Security Awareness Month. The light-hearted, slightly silly messaging is brought to you by the Office of Information Technology with a very serious mission to prevent cyberthreats through awareness, education and action.
Here are a few essential practices to help keep your information secure:
- Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Avoid using the same password across multiple accounts. Consider using a password manager to create and store complex passwords.
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Adding an extra layer of protection to your accounts can make a big difference. MFA helps verify your identity before granting access to sensitive systems. For your Clarkson accounts, OIT has already done this for you with Duo but most personal accounts also support MFA.
- Beware of Phishing Scams: Be cautious when opening unsolicited emails or clicking on unfamiliar links. Look out for suspicious messages asking for personal information.
- Update Software Regularly: Keeping your operating system and applications up to date ensures you have the latest security patches.
- Secure Your Devices: Ensure your laptops, smartphones, and other devices are protected with strong passwords, encryption, and antivirus software. Lock your screens when not in use.
By staying vigilant and following these simple steps, you can help protect yourself and our community from cyber threats. Let’s work together to keep our digital environment safe and secure.
