Author, Holbrook Aerospace Airfoil Vector Format

Will present a talk titled:

Parametrization of Aerospace Design with HAVF Airfoils

Abstract:  The presentation will detail a specific HAVF format used to parametrize airfoil design for complete propeller and wing designs. The format will be explained in detail and compared to other parameterization methods, both in terms of ease of use and data efficiency. The foundation of the HAVF format will be expanded with examples of how it is used as an optimization language. The HAVF book/library will also be mentioned, highlighting its active role in optimization and how it aids in education. Examples of projects completed using the language will be shown, along with import tools for popular CAD programs. The overall approach emphasizes a meshless optimization process capable of identifying highly optimized geometries using only small text files. This method, coupled with the increasing availability of high core-count computers, presents a promising new field of optimization that can help small companies more easily find geometries to fabricate and test, while also assisting larger industries in generating inputs for advanced CFD tools.

Bio: Austin Holbrook earned his degree from Clarkson University in 2015. He began working that same year at Lumenier, designing brushless motors for what was then one of the largest retailers of drone parts in the U.S. In 2016, his work expanded from brushless motor design and production to include propellers. Production lines for both were successfully established, with several trips to China to visit CNC and injection molding vendors. In 2018, Austin left Lumenier to perform general CAD drafting work and to dedicate time and resources to experimenting with various aerospace concepts. In 2022, he founded Holbrook Aerospace, where he currently serves as CEO. In 2023, he authored the “Holbrook Aerospace Airfoil Vector Format.” The company specializes in selling tools and libraries for aerospace engineering and provides optimization services for projects ranging from large electric commercial aircraft and drone propellers to wind turbines.
