David A Walsh Seminar for the Arts and Sciences – Clarkson Opportunities for Community Engagement in STEM Education

Please join us this Friday the 7th for the David A Walsh Seminar for the Arts and Sciences in Snell 213 at noon. Our speaker is Prof. Katie Kavanagh, Director of the Institute for STEM Education, Professor in the Department of Mathematics, and Robert A Plane Endowed Chair, who will speak about “Clarkson Opportunities for Community Engagement in STEM Education.” Abstract and bio is below.

Clarkson Opportunities for Community Engagement in STEM Education

Clarkson’s Institute for STEM Education supports student achievement, exemplary pedagogy, K12 outreach and STEM discipline specific educational research. With a focus on engagement and workforce preparation, the expertise of faculty across disciplines and campuses have a space to create learning experiences and curriculum that supports STEM. Clarkson faculty and students can and do make a positive impact on the local community through partnerships with local school districts and licensed professionals. In this talk, opportunities for community engagement with Institute programming will be presented.

Bio: Dr. Kavanagh is a computational applied mathematician who specializes in simulation-based optimization, engineering design, and agriculture/water resources management as well as pedagogical research in the areas of math modeling education and rural STEMM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics and Medicine). She is committed to K12 education outreach locally and nationally, helping to bring in over $11M over the last 21 years in grant funds to improve STEM learning experiences for students and teachers. She is the former Vice President of Education for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the Director of CU’s Institute for STEM Education.
