Writing with Generative AI

Abstract: This talk will focus on my preliminary investigation into effective uses of generative AI in professional writing. IEEE journals approve the use of genAI in correcting grammar and spelling, but want acknowledgement of any other use. This policy still leaves many grey areas, which we will discuss. Other uses of genAI such as changing level of formality and length can be useful. However, the biggest consideration is the need for you to be a careful, reader, editor and fact-checker of AI output. I argue that although it shouldn’t be, it is in fact an existential change in the role of students. I will discuss why this role reversal is wonderful, and also frightening, and how you can prepare yourself to adapt.
