Sofian Audry has been appointed assistant professor of communication, media & design at Clarkson University.
He received his Ph.D. in humanities from Concordia University, his master of arts in communication from University of Quebec in Montreal, and both his master of science in computer science and bachelor of science in mathematics and computer science from the University of Montreal.
Audry’s research interests are in artificial intelligence, artificial life, agent-based art, behavior aesthetics, computational media art, deep learning, machine learning, media art history, and robotic art. Through his interdisciplinary practice and research at the crossroad between artificial intelligence and contemporary new media art, he works to develop new artistic practices employing artificial agents and behaviors, to design new tools for new media creators, and to critically engage with the material, theoretical, and historical dimensions of artificial intelligence technologies.
His work and research have been presented in multiple international events and venues, such as Ars Electronica, Club Transmediale, Dutch Design Week, Elektra Festival, International Digital Arts Biennale, International Symposium on Electronic Art, La Gaîté Lyrique, Marrakech Biennale, Nuit Blanche Paris, Society for Arts and Technology, V2 Institute for Unstable Media, and the Vitra Design Museum. He is also the author of several articles in publications and conference proceedings and has contributed several open source softwares and libraries for real-time media and interactivity.
He serves on the Digital Arts Committee of the Quebec Center for Media Arts and has served on multiple other juries and committees, including as president of the board of directors of Perte de Signal center and on the evaluation jury of the Boston Festival of Indie Games.
His affiliations include Art + Artificial Agents Lab, The Trope Tank, Hexagram, LabXmodal, Center for Sensory Studies, Perte de Signal artist-run center, and Quebec Center for Media Arts.
Audry is also a new media artist and previously served as an assistant professor at the University of Maine and as a consultant in new media technologies.
