COMM 391 Design-Driven Innovation on Wednesdays 10-12:45 with Daved Barry

This course is for students who want out-of-the-box yet practical ways for creating the new and useful. It is an applied, practice-based course that uses design to boost innovation within STEM (e.g., technological innovation), creative industries (e.g. gaming, film), social and not-for-profit enterprises, sustainability and environmental issues, new ventures—in short, the study areas at Clarkson. The course considers the whole gamut of innovation, from ideation and prototyping to communication and implementation, and from the innovation of things (e.g., inventing, product innovation) to innovating systems (e.g., social innovation, strategic innovation). Different design frameworks will be introduced, ranging from easy to difficult and from incremental to frame-changing. In keeping with a design orientation, classes will follow a studio format, where studio entails “making to learn in hands-on ways.” Hands-on means that you will work on innovation challenges using both 2D and 3D methods.
