Clarkson Professor Honored For Excellence in Research and Scholarship at University Recognition Day

Byron Erath, an Associate Professor of Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering in Clarkson’s Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering has been honored with the Clarkson Excellence in Research in Scholarship Award. Professor Erath was chosen for this award for his work in the area of voiced speech production. His research on voiced speech production provides unique insights into the diagnosis, treatment, surgical intervention and remediation of vocal pathologies.

This award is granted each year to recognize research by one recently tenured faculty member who has had a significant impact on his/her chosen field of study. Any faculty member is eligible to receive the award within five years of attaining tenure at Clarkson.

“I was honored to receive this award, and it is nice to be recognized for my research efforts and contributions to the scientific community,” Professor Erath said.

Professor Erath was hired as an Assistant Professor at Clarkson in 2012. In 2018 he was promoted to Associate Professor. He has published 25 papers in archival journals, presented over 50 conference presentations and has brought in nearly $900,000 in funding from various agencies, including the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. Professor Erath also manages undergraduate student projects that aim to develop rehabilitative and assistive devices to aid laryngectomized individuals with common tasks of daily life. Multiple projects have been recognized as a top-six finalist at a National design competition, including winning first place in 2017.
