Our next conference call with our editorial team will feature our Science + Technology Editors Maggie Villiger, Bijal Trivedi, Eric Smalley and Daniel Merino. We encourage you to include communicators involved in different aspects of science and technology, including colleagues in virus, epidemiology and drug development centers and institutes, to participate in this call. Scholars from many fields write for the Science + Technology section. Please read on to see what each of the editors is focused on.

Maggie Villiger is looking for stories on:

  • Cutting-edge COVID-19 research, across all disciplines
  • Cool chapters from the history of science or medicine
  • Everyday science topics (i.e., the smell of rain, the smell of urine after eating asparagus, the color of blood)
  • Archaeology and anthropology topics

Bijal Trivedi is looking for stories on: 

  • Cutting-edge COVID-19 research: basic science, vaccines, genomics, evolution, antiviral drug development
  • CRISPR gene editing, particularly for fixing genetic diseases 
  • Gene therapy 
  • Anything related to the human microbiome
  • Engineered microbes for treating disease
  • Planetary research
  • Astronomy
  • Space law
  • Astrobiology 

Eric Smalley is looking for stories on:

  • Technological advancements that have a clear, immediate or imminent effect on people’s daily lives
  • Stories about how technology is affecting society (and vice versa)
  • Stories at the intersection of technology and human behavior
  • Stories that help people grasp complicated and topical technological issues
  • Stories out of left field – unexpected breakthroughs, juxtapositions, combinations…

Daniel Merino is looking for stories on:

  • Longevity research
  • Personalized medicine
  • Wearable tech/medicine
  • Applied AI/machine learning
  • Space tech/health/economy (rocketry, habitation, health issues, resource use/development)
  • Physics (applied, theoretical, philosophical ramifications)
  • Climate/weather modeling and prediction
  • Quick-turnaround stories on coronavirus news or soon-to-be released papers, tech, innovation 

Here’s the agenda:

  • Detail what the Science + Technology desk plans to chase over the next six months.
  • Explain the needs of the desk as it relates to rapid response.
  • Take your questions and hear your ideas about scholarship you have to share with our team.
