Earth Day Virtual Events

Hi Clarkson,

Wednesday is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day! I hope you’ll all take a moment to reflect on the systems that sustain us. It is also a good time to reflect on what we can do as an institution of higher education. Please visit Clarkson’s Sustainability Commitment page to learn about our climate action plan and our strengths and opportunities within the AASHE Stars program (where we have a gold rating for sustainability).

Happy Earth Day! Here are a few virtual activities we hope you’ll enjoy:

  1. Earth Day Live

From April 22, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, to April 24, activists, performers, thought leaders, and artists will come together for an empowering, inspiring, and communal three day livestream mobilization. The fights against the coronavirus and the climate crisis go hand-in-hand, and as we work to flatten the curve of this pandemic, we must strive toward the longer term goal of building a society rooted in sustainability and justice.

  1. The Story of Plastic

Earth Day, April 22, at 2pm

  1. Solving the Pandemic and Climate Crises with a Just Transition

Apr 23, 2020 12:00 PM

Webinar by Tufts University.

On the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we are starkly reminded of the intersectionality of environmental unsustainabilities with social, racial, and economic injustices. The first Earth Day in 1970 came out of the movements of the 1960s and created a diverse big tent that included labor unions, women’s groups, and many others. Today, in the midst of the corona virus pandemic, there is an opportunity at least on par with 1970 to shift popular consciousness to recognize the common roots leading to not only the pandemic, but also the climate crisis and extreme wealth inequality. In this session, we will explore the opportunities in this COVID crisis and discuss how the immediate work to be done can push us further down the path towards a “Just Transition” that “changes everything”.

  1. Join the Clarkson’s Campus 2020 EcoChallenge

Month of April

Join Clarkson’s EcoChallenge team as we compete against other universities. Points are awarded to the team for each challenge you commit to complete, and each eco activity that you already practice. It is a nice platform with tangible actions to consider and complete. The actions are organized into the following categories: waste, food, health, transportation, energy, community, nature, water, and simplicity 🙂
