Clarkson University President Tony Collins has announced that Alan Christian has been granted tenure in the Department of Biology in the School of Arts & Sciences. He is a Professor of Biology.
Dr. Christian concentrates his research on investigating pure and applied life history, ecology, evolution research in freshwater ecosystems, especially freshwater mussels, and analyzing the effects of natural and anthropogenic perturbations (e.g. land use land cover change, urbanization, restoration) on freshwater organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems.
His research spans local, state, regional, and international borders and helps move both science and conservation management forward. While maintaining a focus on freshwater mussel ecology and conservation his work contributes to the study of pure and applied watershed environmental issues. His research addresses critical issues of the aquatic ecosystem function in urbanized and rural communities facing emerging threats of global change as well as the loss of ecosystem services.
He received his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, his Master of Science in Biological Sciences from Arkansas State University, and his Ph.D. in Zoology from Miami University. Prior to coming to Clarkson, he spent a decade at the University of Massachusetts-Boston as an Associate Professor of Biology, before that, he was an Assistant and Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Arkansas State University.
This past year Dr. Christian served as the Chair of the university-wide Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee (SLOAC), a role he will continue in this coming academic year. The charge of the SLOAC is to: 1) lead the Clarkson University student learning outcomes assessment program by establishing, implementing, and managing the scope, policies, and procedures of the annual cycle of student learning outcomes by a) developing an annual assessment cycle and timeline of collecting, evaluating, acting, and reporting, b) reviewing and providing feedback on annual plans for student learning outcomes (assurance of learning) assessment, c) reviewing and providing feedback on annual reports of student learning outcomes, action plans, and continuous improvement; and 2) develop the capabilities of a University unit’s instructional and non-instructional student learning outcomes assessment through a) creating and maintaining a Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Handbook, b) providing reporting software support and training, c) providing informational materials and training activities concerning designs, techniques, evaluating, and reporting.
