Why is grass being removed behind Moore?

The ISE has recently gotten a pilot low-mow project approved for campus. Several areas are going to turn into biodiverse meadows rather than manicured lawns. This will create habitat, beautify the campus, save money on mowing, and allow the grounds crew more time to complete other tasks. Behind Moore we have started removing grass. We are prepping the area now and then in the spring we will be planting a Northeast wildflower seed mix of perennials as shown in the photo.

We intend to add some of this flower seed mix into parts of the “brown spot” along the Munter Trail. Other areas involved in our low mow project will simply be allowed to return to a meadow naturally. The construction club and the machine shop will be building bird houses to compliment our new low mow zones. These areas will be cut once a year at the end of the season. If you have any questions or you would like to volunteer some labor to this rewilding effort please contact Maria Pelusi (ISE intern) or Assistant Director of Sustainability Alex French.
