Incomplete grade & Dean’s Exception reminder to all faculty

Incomplete Grades

As the end of the term approaches, you may be contacted by students seeking an incomplete grade in your course. Here are some important reminders about incompletes:

  • Students who seek an incomplete should submit the I-Grade request form in myCU, no later than the last day of finals. The granting of an incomplete grade is entirely at your discretion.
  • Incomplete grades cannot be given if the student is failing the course, or has an academic integrity violation for the course.
  • An incomplete grade should only be given if the student has extenuating circumstances.
  • Whenever possible, the deadline for work completed, should be prior to the start of the next term.
  • Incomplete grades DO impact academic standing, eligibility for Dean’s List or President’s List, and financial aid eligibility. If a student has any questions about how an incomplete will impact them, they should contact their SAS Rep for guidance.

Pursuant to the Regulations, for students who fail to complete the work required to resolve an incomplete grade by the deadline stated on the form, a grade of “F” will be recorded.

Please read this earlier announcement about changes to the incomplete grade policy.

The Dean’s Exception

The Dean’s Exception Form is for all exceptions to academic policies that do NOT involve gradation requirements, and may be considered when extraordinary circumstances arise to facilitate student achievement. The request for an exception is initiated by the student, reviewed and recommended by the student’s academic department, and approved by the student’s academic dean.

Students who seek an exception to an academic policy must access the form in myCU to begin the process of review.  The approvals of granting the Dean’s Exception is at the equitable discretion of the appropriate academic administrators.

The regulations governing incomplete grades and Dean’s Exceptions may be found in the Academic Regulations.
