Chief Inclusion Office Weekly DEIB Resources Lunar New Year

The Chief Inclusion Office weekly resources are meant to help people explore diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging [DEIB] for themselves, in their communities, and in our institution.  They may be resources that help you re-examine society and do some introspective reflection, explain core concepts like intersectionality or anti-racism, or practical guides for action, such as how to review a syllabus for equity-minded practice.
The resources will be linked in the announcement and saved to a common google folder for all to reference, https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1a0DXWcmwl4a5zM5lMsBZR_7uk8_OZhIY?usp=sharing
If you would like to share thoughts on resources, please contact Diversity@Clarkson.edu.  We will also be using some of these resources as the basis of workshops and professional development throughout the year.
The Lunar New Year is here.  Learn about and acknowledge the wide-ranging traditions celebrated here at Clarkson and around the world.  Also, take time to recoginize like so many of our celebrations in this era of COVID-19 these celebrations will be very different.  Let’s help support our community members who celebrate the Lunar New Year and wish them luck and prosperity.

  • The Lunar New Year is a time of beliefs. Those who celebrate don’t take out the trash or clean on the first day, as doing so is said to wash away your luck and prosperity. The second day, considered the beginning of the year, is spent with family. The third day is seen as a day prone to arguments, so visiting family and friends is avoided!
  • The new year is determined by the lunar calendar and the holiday lasts 15 days.
  • Legend says that “Nian,” a half-dragon, half-lion monster, comes out of hiding and attacks people (especially children) during the Lunar New Year. Fireworks are used to scare him away!
