Invasive Buckthorn Removal – Volunteers Wanted

Thursday, April 22nd
1pm – 2:30pm
Meet by the Munter Boat House

The ISE recently mapped out several invasive species on campus. These included knotweed, phragmytes, and buckthorn. These plants are not intended for our region. They are rapidly spreading and out-competing our native North Country vegetation. The price and energy required for removing invasive species can both increase exponentially.
Join us to remove buckthorn and protect our native forest species on April 22nd. The ISE is partnering with SLELO PRISM and The Nature Conservancy for this event and for identifying mitigation strategies for our other invasive species on campus. Peter Zimmer from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will be leading the workshop, teaching us mechanical ways to kill invasive buckthorn. We want volunteers to help us remove the buckthorn and to learn Peter’s technique for buckthorn removal so the effort can be repeated throughout other parts of campus.

This entire event will be outdoors and attendance will be capped at 25 participants. Masks and social distancing are required. If you have any questions please reach out to me.
