COVID-19 Read:  Mask Wearing During Periods of High Transmission

Clarkson Potsdam Community,

As reported by St. Lawrence County Public Health and on the CDC’s website that tracks community levels, St. Lawrence County, which is where our Potsdam campus is located, is considered an area of high transmission for COVID-19.

The CDC has made comprehensive updates to this site, including recommendations for persons in high community level counties like ours to wear a mask indoors in public settings around others, to stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and boosters; and to get tested if you have symptoms.  As shared on the site, people may choose to wear a mask at anytime and people with symptoms, a positive test or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask.

One-way masking does reduce COVID-19 transmission — people who want to wear a mask for any reason deserve our respect.  Our University policy remains that everyone is required to carry a mask with them and to wear one when asked by a person in close proximity to you and/or as requested by a faculty member for a classroom or group activity.   Wearing a mask in any public group setting / circumstances is strongly encouraged.   The CDC’s recommendations are prudent for all persons to know and follow.

The University is monitoring the county’s case count and staying in contact with local public health representatives as well as New York State partners and will communicate any updates on mask recommended practices or new/renewed mandates.

The St. Lawrence County Public Health Website provides numerous links and information about COVID-19 resources ranging from booster shot eligibility and appointments to their process following a positive report of COVID-19.   We encourage those who are interested  learn more by going to:  https://www.stlawco.org/Departments/PublicHealth/COVID-19
