Clarkson University Honors Two Alumni with Lifetime Engagement Awards

Ellsworth F. Vines ‘65 James F. Wood ‘64 and have received the Lifetime Engagement Award from their alma mater, Clarkson University.

The award is given to alumni who have remained engaged and supportive of Clarkson’s mission from students onward. The award requires at least fifty years from graduation.

Ellsworth F. Vines
Ellsworth F. Vines received his BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MS in Industrial Management from Clarkson in 1965 and 1967, respectively.

He was involved in CUSA and is a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Ell joined Phalanx in 1965.

In 2008, Ell retired as senior vice president from Dick Corporation, a major contractor, construction manager and design builder.

He returned to campus regularly to recruit Clarkson graduates. He was past president of the Alumni Association and served on Clarkson’s Board of Trustees.

Ell is a Legion, Loyal, Leadership, Legacy and Legend donor in Clarkson’s Good Knights Guild. In 1995, Ell was awarded the Golden Knight Award, and, in 2003 and 2016, he received the Charles S. Ehrlich ‘56 Alumni Admissions Award.


Ell resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Sue. Their son, Andy, is a 1993 Clarkson graduate, and their grandson, Matthew, will graduate from Clarkson in 2023.

James F. Wood
James F. Wood received his BS in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson in 1964 and his MBA from Kent State University.

At Clarkson, Jim was a member of the Clarkson Union Board, Knight Magazine, American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Varsity “C” Club. He wrestled, played soccer and lacrosse and is a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity.

Jim is director of the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center, Advanced Coal Technology Consortium at West Virginia University (WVU), as well as director of the WVU Energy Institute.

He was past president of the Clarkson Alumni Association and serves on the Board of Trustees.

Jim is a Legion, Loyal, Leadership, Legacy and Legend donor in Clarkson’s Good Knights Guild. He was awarded the Golden Knight Award and Roundtable Society Award.

He resides in Morgantown, West Virginia. Jim has three children and seven grandchildren.
