Clarkson’s Institute for STEM Education (STEM Ed) has formed a Leadership Council, including leaders in STEM fields from across the nation, which held its first meeting in July.
“This is a critical time for STEM in our nation,” said Katie Kavanagh, Director of the STEM Ed Institute. “We are honored to welcome the members of our inaugural Leadership Council to help Clarkson address the challenges and opportunities in training the next generation of problem solvers in STEM.”

The STEM Ed Institute, formed in 2017, has been strengthening and spreading Clarkson’s thriving STEM culture over the last 5 years by supporting inclusive faculty teaching excellence, engaging Clarkson students in outreach, and partnering with K-12 districts and teaching programs to generate educational and pedagogical research.
STEM Ed’s Leadership Council will support and expand the Institute’s impact by building its reputation as a national leader in STEM Education, with a focus on student achievement, inclusive practices, and workforce preparation.
“We need a STEM culture change,” said Kavanagh, Professor and Robert A. Plane Endowed Chair in Clarkson’s Department of Mathematics. “Our Council of like-minded STEM leaders can help us to deploy our values of collaborative teaching and innovative learning to support this change both regionally and nationally.
The Council will help the STEM Ed Institute accomplish its goals of increasing recruitment and advancement of students from diverse backgrounds, enhancing teacher preparation for inclusive teaching practices, and supporting Clarkson faculty across our 3 campuses to generate learning and curriculum that support all students’ success both in and beyond college.”
