Clarkson Mechanical Engineering graduate student, Nagarajan Radhakrishnan, attended this year’s American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR) conference where he won the best poster award, alongside Prof. Suresh Dhaniyala from the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
“Our research is about designing and developing aerosol sampling inlets for research aircraft to efficiently sample a wide range of particles from the stratosphere. So what we presented in the current poster is a study about the effect of turbulence inside one of the low-turbulence inlets and the fate of different particle sizes entering the inlets (aspiration efficiency).” Radhakrishnan states. His research results show that slowing down a flow suddenly induces high turbulence, which he compares to hitting breaks while driving on snow, instead of slowing down, the car tends to skid more.
Radhakrishnan says he was grateful for the opportunity to attend the AAAR conference and witness cutting-edge research happening in the area of aerosol science.
The Clarkson AIR (Aerosol Instrumentation Research) Lab mainly focuses on developing techniques for accurately characterizing airborne particle properties and understanding the fate of aerosol particles in the environment. “We have a wonderful team of researchers working towards understanding and exploring these problems. I would also like to thank all my lab mates for their valuable input in my research,” Radhakrishnan said.
