MP210/MP310 Food to Energy: A K-12/University Partnership to develop a
Resource Recovery Program

Work together with a small team of students on projects related to recovering energy
from food waste. The topic is ‘turning food waste into energy’ through anaerobic
digestion.”  Students select their own projects early in the semester, example topics
include: (1) increase awareness on campus about food waste and increase the use of
Clarkson’s anaerobic digester to treat campus food waste; (2) develop activities for
middle/high school students about food waste and resource recover; (3) facilitate an
outreach program with a local K12 school. 
Earn 1, 2, or 3 credits and gain presentation experience, in school and at the spring
Research and Project Symposium (RAPS).

MP210 Catalogue Description 
Clarkson students will work with Clarkson University and a local school district to
encourage food waste diversion from the solid waste stream and to explore beneficial
uses of food waste for nutrient and energy recovery. Students will develop lesson plans
to be implemented in K-12 classes as well as work with student teams to promote best
food waste practices.
