David A. Walsh ’67 Arts & Sciences Mini-Conference Grant

The Committee for the David A. Walsh ’67 Arts and Sciences Seminar Series welcomes proposals for a
maximum of $2,000 to support two mini-conferences on an interdisciplinary theme topically relevant to
departments in the School of Arts and Sciences. The mini-conferences can be held at any time during the
academic year of 2023/24 (excluding breaks). Proposed conferences may be aimed at fostering on-going
research at Clarkson University, improving pedagogy in the university, or a combination of the two.

In no more than three pages, please 1) describe the motivation and goals of the mini-conference, 2) explain its anticipated outcomes and benefits, 3) identify prospective speakers, and 4) provide a tentative timeline and a detailed budget including alternative sources of financial support. The Committee should also be told if the proposed conference complements other local or regional events and is therefore able to take advantage of what may be an infrequent occurrence (e.g. national conferences bringing speakers from across North America to regions adjacent Potsdam, responsiveness to local concerns, or collaborations with other regional institutions or industries).

Please note that included in the mission of the David A. Walsh ’67 Arts & Sciences Seminar Series is the
intention to foster interdisciplinary research and collaborations within Clarkson University and to nurture
relationships between the university and other institutions of research. This mini-conference grant is part of the effort to realize that mission. The successful application will best demonstrate the following:

  • Joint submission by faculty representing two (or more) departments in the School of Arts & Sciences or
  • joint submission by faculty representing two (or more) distinct disciplines within one department in
  • the School of Arts & Sciences
  • Clearly articulated and reasonable motivation for the proposed mini-conference
  • Ambitiousness of the program and proposal
  • Identification of institutional stakeholders and possible cost-sharing opportunities
  • Inclusion of researchers beyond Clarkson University
  • Path to publication or path to future collaborations leading to extramural support
  • Path to improving quality of institutional teaching

Additional points weighing in an application’s favor may include:

  • Professional development opportunities for outstanding undergraduate students
  • Links with the School of Business, the School of Engineering, or the Lewis School of Health Sciences

Proposals should be addressed to Dean Darryl Scriven. Applications will be reviewed by the Committee for the David A. Walsh ’67 Arts & Sciences Seminar Series. Please email applications to Shontai Pohl
(pohl@clarkson.edu).
