United Healthcare vs. University of Vermont Medical Systems Contract Negotiations

This week the University learned that contract negotiations between UMR United Healthcare and University of Vermont Medical Systems (UVM) have stalled. Both parties are committed to continue working on reaching a final agreement.

The University recognizes that access to affordable health care is vital, and that the challenges to access posed by living in a rural area are deep and often frustrating. We understand that the current situation is incredibly stressful and empathize with those struggling with the unknown. We are deeply sympathetic to the employees who have reached out with concerns about the possible impact of this situation.

It is very important to understand that this situation is ever-evolving, and much is beyond our immediate control but we are committed to reviewing all options to ensure that there is not a disruption in care or treatment.

This also happened last year and this is the second year of negotiations between UHC and UVM.  The University understands that the information that is being reported is stressful and can cause uncertainty. UMR is doing its best to ensure that healthcare cost for the patients does not increase and remains affordable for both parties.

We have received the following message from UMR:

UMR and United Healthcare are committed to providing our customers with access to a broad network of physicians, hospitals and other health care professionals to meet their individual needs. Occasionally, for a variety of reasons, a relationship ends between our network and a provider.

United Healthcare is working diligently to continue the contractual relationship with University of Vermont Health Network. Unfortunately, if an agreement is not reached before the deadline, the University of Vermont Health Network will be out-of-network, effective April 1, 2023.

The University’s UMR representatives expect that there will likely be contract extensions until both parties can come to a final agreement. Same as with the extension from last year.  If this happens then there will be no impact on employees or their care.  However, to be prepared, we are looking at options to assist employees that may be affected.

Clarkson is working closely with Relph Benefit Advisors and UMR to come up with a solution while the negotiations continue. We will continue to keep you informed.
