Clarkson Golden Knight Battalion Transporting from Cheel Lawn in Boeing CH-47 Chinook on April 20 and 23

In this communication:

  • The Mission of Task Force New York with our ROTC Golden Knight Battalion
  • An Opportunity to see up close the Boeing CH-47 Chinook from B Co., 3-10 GSAB “Mountain Movers”, Fort Drum NY.
  • Safety Procedures During Active Landing and Take Off on Thursday 4/20 and Sunday 4/23

Mission: We are proud to share that Clarkson University Army ROTC Cadets will be a part of Task Force New York conducting a Joint Field Training Exercise that also includes cadets from Cornell University and Syracuse University from April 20 to April 23, 2023.

Clarkson cadets from the Golden Knight Battalion will be picked up on a Boeing CH-47 Chinook Helicopter on the Cheel Lawn on the Collins Hill Campus at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 20 to launch their mission and will return at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

Clarkson Community Engagement:  After the helicopter lands on Thursday morning, members of the Clarkson community may join Clarkson Aerospace students getting a closer look at the Chinook before the cadets depart for their mission.  Before 9:00 a.m., please go to the authorized viewing area in front of the Student Center as noted in the green box on the campus map below/attached and wait for further instructions that day from members of Clarkson’s ROTC Cadre.

Safety Procedures:  The rotor wash from the moving blades of the CH-47 Chinook during take off and landing can cause flying dust and debris. A safety plan has been created for this event that defines a perimeter for the public while the Chinook is on campus.  During the active landing and take off of the helicopter, all members of the Clarkson community will be required to not enter the red zone on the attached diagram.  It is advised to be in the viewing area next to the Student Center or to watch from the interior of a building during take-off and landing, and to refrain from being on the Cheel Lawn grass area in the red zone unless accompanied by our ROTC Battalion members at all times while the chopper is present.  Security detail will be present.

While the active landing and take-off periods will be short in duration while the CH-47 crew is in the air space above/near campus, please also anticipate that the CH-47 will be loud.
