Sebastian Geiger, a student majoring in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics in the David D. Reh School of Business at Clarkson University, along with Dr. Patricia Gellasch, adjunct faculty in the Department of Nursing at The College of New Jersey, and Tracy Walsh, MPH, Research Director at Happiest Baby, Inc (HBI), recently published the paper, “A Descriptive Evaluation of Time Savings and Work Experience Among Neonatal Clinicians When Using a Responsive Bassinet”, in the Journal of Neonatal Nursing. Geiger served as a research assistant and provided data analysis support.
The descriptive study explored the experiences of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) clinicians when using the SNOO Smart Sleeper (SNOO) in inpatient settings. SNOO is a responsive bassinet for infants ages 0 to 6 months developed by Happies Baby, Inc. It provides infants with calming, womblike sensations including gentle rocking, white noise, and secure swaddling and has sensors to detect infant fussing. In response, it gradually increases motion and sound, modeling the actions of an experienced caregiver. Once the infant calms, SNOO incrementally returns to its baseline level. If the infant does not calm within several minutes, the bassinet automatically turns off.
The findings of this study showed that NICU clinicians perceived SNOO as a resource that saved them 1.9 hours of time per shift and offered them meaningful workplace support. SNOO utilization helped to improve clinician experience and self-reported workflow, and NICU clinicians perceived this as allowing them more time to focus on higher priority tasks with fewer interruptions. Embracing innovative technologies designed to help nurses deliver quality patient care may present an opportunity for a more efficient workflow with fewer interruptions, thereby allowing nurses to focus their efforts on patients and tasks that most require their expertise.
Mr. Geiger is a senior Business Intelligence and Data Analytics major with minors in Project Management and Information Technology. He is from Troy, NY. Additionally, he is a captain on the Men’s Lacrosse team at Clarkson. To combine his priorities, he is also a team representative on Clarkson’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Next year, he will be returning to Clarkson to continue his studies to pursue an M.B.A. and play another year of lacrosse.
