President Christensen recently signed the Second Nature Presidents’ Climate Commitment and spoke about his views on the need to address our climate crises. This commitment requires us to do things: 1) develop and implement a plan to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and establish a date to reach net zero; and 2) develop plans for adaptation and increased resilience in the face of a changing climate.
President Christensen stated – “Clarkson has a long history of advancing sustainability initiatives. I am pleased to recommit the institution under my administration to continue this important work.”
As a campus, we have already made substantial strides with our climate action planning. Prof. Powers provided an update that reiterated our substantial successes – Our heating, vehicle fuel and electricity greenhouse gas emissions have DECREASED 44%, while the Potsdam campus building sq. footage has increased 53% since 2005.
The campus will continue to develop the means to further reduce our emissions in a timely manner.
