Associated Colleges / SUNY Canton Extends Invitation to Dr. Koritha Mitchell’s Workshop 2023

Dear Associated Colleges community,

SUNY Canton is hosting a virtual professional development workshop with Koritha Mitchell, Ohio State University Professor and currently a Visiting Scholar at Boston University. The virtual workshop will be held on Saturday, September 16th from 9:30 am – noon. The description of this teaching workshop is as follows:

American society seems to be getting more polarized and more violent, but teachers—at every level—feel more trepidation than confidence about addressing issues that are even slightly controversial. This workshop empowers educators to develop strategies that allow them to be proactive rather than reactive, to operate from a clear affirmative stance rather than respond only when a nasty incident forces the issue.

Based on Koritha’s expertise regarding how violence functions and the purpose of all forms of violence (from hate speech to physical attacks), this workshop emphasizes philosophical approaches instructors can adopt and offers concrete practices that put theory into motion.

Koritha’s training offers much that seems incredibly necessary in light of the ways our teaching environment seems more contentious by the day. We scheduled this workshop on a Saturday morning to try and avoid as many class and family conflicts as possible. Please join us; we ask that you register for the workshop so that we know how many to expect. We are grateful to the ACSLV for their support and logistical assistance. The Zoom link will be sent to all participants before the event. We’re so looking forward to it!

Warm regards,

Emily Hamilton-Honey and Lashawanda Ingram
