We Need a Plan for That: Solving Our Future Energy Issues Before They Happen

Abstract: Energy system development has traditionally been reactive in nature. We built new power lines or upgraded substations when new loads appeared and central power plants experience very little turnover. Change no longer happens on the scale of decades. Addressing the climate crisis requires rapid evolution of many aspects of our economy and they all depend on one thing: clean and reliable electricity. Using traditional planning paradigms could result in reliability issues or delays in meeting our targets. However, we can leverage the clarity of our targets to plan ahead and build the future we hope to see, addressing future issues before they happen. This requires detailed assumptions, input from diverse stakeholder groups, and world-leading analyses, so we can lead by example and create an energy system that enables our sustainable future.
Bio: Schuyler Matteson currently serves as Clean Energy Planning Lead at the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS), where he is tasked with leading grid planning efforts under the Coordinated Grid Planning Process and Electric Vehicle Proactive Planning Process. Prior to his role at DPS, Schuyler led New York’s Energy Storage Program and completed numerous statewide planning studies focusing on long-term decarbonization. Schuyler holds a PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems from RIT, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Neuroscience from King’s College London, and a BA with Honors in Mathematics and Philosophy and a BS in Applied Physics from Carson-Newman College.
