Around the World, hosted by the Clarkson Intercultural Ambassadors (CIA), is an exposition aimed at celebrating and bringing awareness to the multitude of cultural, ethnic, and national identities at Clarkson University and in its wider community. The CIA has expanded the event to include participation from all four colleges in St. Lawrence County: Clarkson University, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam.
Around the World will be held on February 24, 2020 from 10 am – 7 pm in the Student Center of Clarkson University. It serves as the inaugural event of the annual Diversity Week (February 24 – 28, 2020) held by Clarkson University through its Diversity and Inclusion Office. The exposition will comprise of three event categories: an art display, cultural exhibitions and performances.
Some of the art on display will come from Clarkson’s own art collection, St. Lawrence Art Council, and the Village of Potsdam Museum.
The Cultural Exhibition will allow students and faculty to showcase their culture to the wider population. This may take the form of indigenous foods, clothes, accessories, photographs, etc. Participants will be allowed to display their culture as they see fit providing they follow general university guidelines and standards. Participants visiting the exhibitions will be given a passport which lists all the cultures on display. Students who fill their passport will be entered in a raffle to win prizes to be determined later.
The Cultural Performances will take the form of poetry, music, dance, theatre, etc. which highlights a particular cultural experience.
The Intercultural Ambassadors are looking for students and faculty to showcase their culture at the event (in all 3 categories). This may include an exploration of their ancestry and the mixture of their indigenous culture with the American lifestyle. All members of the community irrespective of background are welcome to participate.
