Supporting our Muslim Community Members

By now you have heard of the heartbreaking news of the deaths of 50 people and injury to 42 more in the attacks on two New Zealand mosques.  Across all nationalities and creeds, it is important for all members of the Clarkson community – and especially during this time our Muslim community — to feel supported and affirmed in their choice of beliefs.  To echo the words of Gamal Fouda “We are together. We are determined to not let anyone divide us.”  This is affirmed in our Clarkson Values and our joint statement on Diversity and Inclusion issued by the Presidents of the Associated Colleges.

The Chief Inclusion Office, in partnership with the Muslim Student Association (MSA), will be organizing visible ways to show Clarkson’s support for our Muslim community members, the New Zealand Islamic community, and to demonstrate that our Clarkson Values reflect no place for hatred towards others.

  • Outside the D&I Lounge on the first floor of the Student Center, there is a display with 50 candles memorizing the 50 victims.
  • On Sunday, March 31, the Muslim Student Association Banquet is in the Student Center Multipurpose Rooms (MPR) starting at 5pm.  They have extended a welcome to the community to join them.
  • There will be a public Muslim prayer on campus on Tuesday, April 2, MPRs, specific time to follow. The MSA and anyone who wants to join or stand in solidarity in prayer is more than welcome for the brief period of recognition and headscarves are available.
  • We will be ordering shirts to show support and as part of a fundraiser to benefit the victims and their families.  Deadline to order is April 10.  MSA will be tabling to take orders, next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, between 11:00am-3pm. There will be a limited number available for free.  However, we ask that all make a donation to increase the funds sent to the victims’ and their families. They will be available the week of April 22.
  • There will be a prayer rug display as well. This will be displayed the week of April 22 in the Student Center Forum.
