Clarkson University President Tony Collins has announced that Sulapha Peethamparan has been promoted from associate professor to professor of civil & environmental engineering in the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering.
Peethamparan has been a faculty member at Clarkson University since 2008. She received her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University, Master of Science from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, master of engineering from the National University of Singapore, and a bachelor of technology from Mahatma Gandhi University, India. Before joining Clarkson, Peethamparan was a post-doctoral scholar at Princeton University in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Peethamparan’s research expertise is in the development, characterization, performance evaluation, and modeling of cement-based materials, primarily focusing on developing sustainable infrastructural materials. Currently, her group is pursuing research on Geopolymer or alkali activated concretes that do not contain any Portland cement, the use of several industrial waste/by-product materials in high-performance concretes, the use of biomaterial for developing a new type of cement, and CO2/NOX sequestration using new or demolished concrete.
Peethamparan’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and technical papers. She has made presentations at numerous national and international conferences. Peethamparan has received external research funding from several agencies including the National Science Foundation, New York State Energy Research, and Development Authority, the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute, the Region 2 University Transportation Research Center, and industry. She has mentored 15 graduate and 25 undergraduate students in research.
Prof. Peethamparan is an associate editor for the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering and the chair of the 123-Research and Current Development technical committee at the American Concrete Institute. She is an active member of the American Concrete Institute, Transportation Research Board, Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and American Society for Testing and Materials.
Peethamparan’s dual commitment to research and teaching was recognized with the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2011. She was inducted to the million dollar club in 2014 (Clarkson) and is the recipient of the Albert Merrill Award in 2016 (CEE, Clarkson).
