Clarkson University will host River Institute Project Scientist Dr. Leigh McGaughey on Friday, Sept 13 at 2 p.m. to speak about the Upper St. Lawrence River and the River Institute, along with the objectives and progress of the Great River Rapport.
Clarkson University Biology Professor Michael Twiss said Dr. McGaughey’s talk will focus on the use of ecological indicators to speak to the health of the Upper St. Lawrence River.
“Ecological indicators are signs that we need to observe and these signs can help us understand the status of the health of the St. Lawrence River,” Twiss said. “This work is an important part of environmental governance, where knowledge is sought, it is organized, and shared in a collaborative manner and actions are initiated.”
Dr. McGaughey’s expertise include invertebrate biology, stable isotopes, ecosystem modelling, remote sensing, ecosystem indicators and ecosystem services.
River Institute is a non‐government organization established in 1994 as a unique community partnership among governments, educators, business and industry, and the Mohawks of Akwesasne.
With the St. Lawrence River as its natural laboratory, River Institute has earned an international reputation for research excellence. Its scientific work contributes locally, nationally and internationally to the greater understanding of how large river ecosystems and their components function.
Friday’s talk will be held in Bertrand H. Snell Hall on Clarkson’s Campus in Lecture Room 212.
