CAMP labs users improve fume hood use for energy and safety

Dear Labs,

In 2018 the ISE and EHS departments partnered to create a Green Labs Program for Clarkson. “Shut the Sash” is one of the programs’ initiatives. When a fume hood is left open it constantly pulls heated or cooled air out of the building (imagine opening a window in the winter and blowing air out of your house with a box fan). It is also less safe to have a fume hood open since more volatile gases can escape into the lab.

Last year we distributed “Shut the Sash” stickers to each fume hood on campus and we audited how many hoods were left open. This year we re-audited our fume hoods and found the following results:

Number of Fume Hoods2018 Fume Hoods Shut2019 Fume Hoods ShutResults
Camp 6436(56% shut)51(80% shut)42% improvement
Science Center 7667(88% shut)56(74% shut)14% drop
Rowley 14No data9(64% shut)

Fume hoods can consume 3.5 times more energy than a typical household1.  Please consider this when working in your labs. Close your fume hoods or keep them at the green level as indicated by the sticker near the hood.
