Clarkson Research Team’s Publication Featured on Cover of Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters

A recent publication by a research team at Clarkson led by Assistant Physics Professor Dhara Trivedi has been featured on the cover of the Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters.

The publication explores the capturing mechanism of toxic oxoanions from water using three characteristically different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): ZIF-8, iMOF-2c, and MOF-74, using ab initio electronic structure calculations.

Oxoanions are a class of pollutants of increasing concern whose leeching into bodies of water is commonly attributed to the large number of environmentally problematic industrial processes prevalent today. These toxic oxo-anions are a major source of contamination in bodies of water affected by industrial waste and pose a significant problem for the maintenance of healthy ecosystems and clean sources of drinking water for humans. The effective capture of these water contaminants using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a remedy for current environmental concerns.

Emma Russell, a junior physics and chemical engineering student, and Robert Stanton, a physics graduate student, received awards from the Division of Environmental Chemistry of the American Chemical Society for their work on the project. Hayden Brandt, a rising junior physics and chemical engineering student, has also made important contributions to the project, Trivedi said.

“Such recognition gives students and the research team visibility to the community. It also gives them much-needed motivation to pursue research,” Trivedi said of her team’s accomplishment.
