Panel Discussion: Anti-racism Action in Science

We are delighted to invite you to a panel discussion on “Anti-racism Action in Science,” which is part of a series of university-wide conversations about anti-racism and our collective quest for a more just, inclusive, and equitable university and society.

The panel discussion will be held in person on November 17 at 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm in the Peterson Board Room, B.H. Snell Hall, with Zoom access for those attending remotely. Members from outside the University community may attend the event via Zoom. To register for this event, click here. We have a distinguished panel of scholars and thought leaders from our University who discuss racism in science and actionable strategies for making the science anti-racist and, therefore, more inclusive, equitable, and just.  The panel consists of the following scholars and thought leaders:

⧫ Dr. Silvana Andreescu (Professor & Egon Matijevic Endowed Chair of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science)

Dr. Andreescu leads a diverse multicultural research team working at the forefront of materials and sensing systems. She is strongly committed to promoting a culture that celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion at all levels.

⧫ Dr. Andrew David (Assistant Professor of Biology)

Dr. David is a marine biologist and zoologist who specializes in research on invasive species. He is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the journal BioInvasions Records, and sits on the Executive Committee of the Ecological Society of America’s Invasive Species Section. At Clarkson, he teaches first-year courses in Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Evolution and upper-level courses in Parasitology, Zoology and Biological Oceanography.

⧫ Dr. Olaniyi Iyiola (Assistant Professor of Mathematics)

Dr. Iyiola’s research interests are in the areas of applied and computational mathematics and data analytics. Some of his recent research topics have applications in optimization, image processing, infectious diseases, and biochemical and biological pattern formations. He is a member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS). He has a passion in helping in the area of STEM Ed and reaching out to minorities in STEM Ed.

⧫ Dr. Tom Langen (Professor of Biology and Psychology)

Dr. Langen’s work focuses on the causes and consequences of human-caused environmental change. His work has an international focus, especially in Latin America and Africa, and he is involved in graduate education and professional development of Latin American scientists and natural resource managers. He is a member of the Ecological Society of America’s Education Committee, focusing on issues of opportunity, diversity, equity, and inclusion in undergraduate and graduate ecological education and professional opportunities.

⧫ Dr. Lisa Legault (Associate Professor of Psychology)

Dr. Legault is a social psychologist who studies human motivation. Her research focuses on the motivational foundations of positive and helpful social behavior – including prejudice reduction and diversity appreciation. She is the incoming Executive Editor of the Journal of Social Psychology.

⧫ Dr. Jeanna Matthews (Professor of Computer Science)

Dr. Matthews is a professor of computer science at Clarkson University. She is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Technology Policy Committee, a founding co-chair of the ACM Technology Policy Subcommittee on Artificial Intelligence and Algorithmic Accountability and vice-chair of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) – USA AI Policy Committee.

⧫ Dr. Dhara Trivedi (Assistant Professor of Physics)

Dr. Trivedi was born and grew up in Ahmedabad, Gujarat in India. She received her Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Physics, from Gujarat University in India. Trivedi earned her Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Rochester in 2015. In the period of 2015-2018, she worked as a postdoctoral research associate in George Schatz’s group in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University. In 2018 she joined the Physics Department at Clarkson University as a Visiting Assistant Professor. She began as an Assistant Professor at Clarkson University in 2019.

⧫ Dr. Laura Ettinger (Associate Professor of History)

Dr. Ettinger is a historian of women, gender, and the scientific, technological, and medical professions in the United States. She is also an oral historian who sees her mission as amplifying people’s stories and using history to make a difference.

            Professor/Richard C. ’55 & Joy M. Dorf Endowed Chair in Innovation and

            Entrepreneurship)
