Clarkson Bioethics Program Hosts “Pioneering Bioethics: Promoting Research Ethics Around the Globe” Webinar as Part of 20th Anniversary Celebration

As part of its celebration of 20 years of bioethics education, The Bioethics Program of Clarkson University’s Lewis School of Health Sciences and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai will continue its lecture series titled “Pioneering Bioethics: An Anniversary Celebration” on Jan. 14.

The Bioethics Program’s fifth lecture in the series is titled “Promoting Research Ethics Around the Globe – Celebrating the NIH Grant Programs in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Caribbean, Latin America.”

A founding aim of the Bioethics Program was to eliminate the barrier of geography to a quality bioethics education. Students from around the world have enrolled in The Bioethics Program. Through a series of grants from the National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty International Center, the Program has been able to eliminate both the geographical and financial barriers to students in low- and middle-income countries.

In 2004, Prof. Martin Strosberg was awarded the first grant, “E-Education in Research Ethics: Central and Eastern Europe” forming a partnership with Vilnius University, Lithuania. These efforts continue with three current grants. Prof. Rosamond Rhodes leads two grants to develop Research Ethics Master’s degree programs at the University of Belgrade, Serbia and Iuliu Haţieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. And, Prof. Paul Cummins is the principal investigator at Clarkson, also, to develop Master’s degree programs at Autonomous University of Querétaro, Mexico and Saint George’s University, Grenada. A panel of principal investigators, partners, and trainees from these grants will discuss their experience

In this session, we highlight and celebrate the achievements of the trainees, fellows, and graduates from over 34 countries as research ethicists, scholars/researchers, educators, and change agents at the institutional and national levels.

The Bioethics Program’s virtual lecture series marking its twentieth anniversary celebrates the program’s history and future. The monthly, free public panel discussions will run through February.
