Message From the Chair

Meeting the real needs of the American people — that is where our faculty excel. With initiative and drive, they identify a need, whether it be related to the environment or infrastructure, and then devote themselves to fulfilling that need with innovation and ingenuity. We are highlighting some of their efforts below.

— Steven Wojtkiewicz, Professor/Interim Chair of Civil & Environmental Engineering

Blowing in the Wind

As severe weather events become increasingly frequent, learning how to mitigate damage is essential. That’s where Professor Pedro Fernández-Cabán comes in. He recently received a $200K NSF grant to investigate new ways to mitigate wind damage on low-rise buildings. READ MORE

Waste Not, Want Not

For the fourth time, Clarkson has received a grant from Constellation’s E² Energy to Educate program. The funding will allow students and faculty to continue to work with local middle and high schools on food waste and resource recovery initiatives. READ MORE

Sensing Pollutants

Seeing the need for ways to perform large-scale analyses of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment, Clarkson professors Silvana Andreescu and Michelle Crimi ’95 have risen to the challenge. They are developing inexpensive, easy-to-use sensors that measure PFAS in the field, and recently received $250K in NSF support. READ MORE

Welcome!

We are pleased to welcome Lissette Fernandez ’15, MS’21, PhD’21 to the professorial ranks of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, where she has been appointed assistant professor. Her work involves using computationally efficient algorithms to perform analysis and design optimization of vibrational energy harvesters at the infrastructure scale. READ MORE
