Clarkson to Again Offer Equine Studies Summer Courses

This summer Clarkson University will once again offer online equestrian college courses. The three three-credit-hour courses will be offered and taught by Prof. Piper Klemm, Ph.D., publisher of The Plaid Horse.

The courses offered are BEA 110: Business and Bias in the Equestrian Industry, BEA 114: English Riding: History, Culture, and Industry Evolution, and BEA 115: Grit, Toughness, and Contemporary Equestrian Coaching.

These three-credit-hour courses provide students with an intellectual skill set to navigate through and flourish within the equestrian industry and are aimed at educating not only college students but high schoolers, equestrian professionals, equine business owners, and others alike.

Former students have found the courses to be incredibly beneficial. “Over the summer, through Clarkson University, I was able to take part in a wonderful college course taught by Dr. Piper Klemm. During this time I was able to learn the ins and outs of how the finances of the equestrian world work. The course entailed barn management and upkeep, the difference of buying and leasing a horse, how that can help benefit or challenge the rider, and even how your environment will affect the prices of different horses or equipment.  I was able to obtain the knowledge of these vast topics within the span of a month, that I can now apply to my future career,” said former student Simone Taylor.

“I’m excited to do my second year at Clarkson University this year and continue my equine business knowledge and education. Last summer’s class made me more aware of my surroundings and what it takes to be in the high-competition horse show environment. I look for balance from just being a rider.” Kat Fuqua, National Champion Dressage & Horse Show Rider.

Fuqua’s winnings include championships three years in a row at the National Horse Show, the Wellington International Circuit, two-time Champion at USEF Pony Finals, winner of the USEF Pony Medal Finals, and Grand Champion at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show.

Prof. Klemm is recognized for her commitment to education in the industry. In addition to her college teaching, through The Plaid Horse magazine, the weekly podcast the #Plaidcast, books, articles, speaking engagements, and support of educational pursuits, she puts learning front and center.
