Students in Clarkson’s Biochemistry & Proteomics Laboratories Attend ACS Northeastern Regional Meeting

Members of the Biochemistry and Proteomics Laboratories at Clarkson University led by Professor Costel Darie attended the Northeastern regional meeting held in Rochester, NY from October 2-5, 2022. The meeting featured technical sessions and poster presentations on a variety of topics. Students from the Darie lab had the opportunity to present posters, sit in on oral presentations and network with other scientists in the area.

“This experience was amazing,” said John Carlson, a sophomore majoring in Chemistry and Biomolecular science major, who had the opportunity to present a poster. “I was able to communicate with alumni, present work and learn about other fields of chemistry”, ended Carlson.  Another student, Norman Haaker, a sophomore Biology major, said “This was an amazing opportunity to learn more about chemistry and the different disciplines while exploring a new city”. A full list of attendees and their poster presentations are listed below.

Danielle Whitham, Chemistry PhD student presented “Proteomic Investigation of human serum from donors with triple-negative breast cancer and matched controls to identify protein biomarkers for breast cancer detection”

Reatha von Holtz, a Chemistry and Biomolecular Science major presented work from our collaborator Dr. Alina Petre at the University of Iasi, Romania titled “Mass Spectrometric based approach for Lysosomal Storage Diseases Diagnostic in newborns”.

Isabella Pelkey, a Biology major presented “Optimization of the In-gel sample preparation for mass spectrometry-based proteomics”.

John Carlson, a Chemistry and Biomolecular science major presented “Proteomics Analysis of human breast milk using mass spectrometry to reveal potential protein biomarkers for early breast cancer detection”.

Isabelle Sullivan, a Biology major presented “Proteomic analysis of sera from an Asian American woman with Triple Negative Breast cancer and matched controls: A case study investigation for biomarker discovery”.

Logan Seymour, a Chemistry and Biomolecular Science major presented “Proteomics investigation of human sera from African American donors with Invasive ductal carcinoma breast cancer and matched controls”.

Mary Donnelly, a Biomolecular science major presented “Investigation of the effects of Human Jumping Translocation Breakpoint (hJTB) protein for potential use as a cancer biomarker”.

Norman Haaker attended the conference as well.
