Clarkson University graduate student Todd Mull recently presented his research on ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods at the NATO AVT-361 Research Workshop on Certification of Bonded Repair on Composite Aircraft Structures in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in late October.
Mull attended the conference with his professor, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Professor Marcias Martinez. Mull spoke as one of the U.S. delegates in front of a diverse audience composed of members from nine different countries.
The NATO Science and Technology (S&T) Collaboration Support Office and the Applied Vehicle Technology (AVT) Panel hosted the research workshop, where Mull spoke on ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods that are implemented to detect and characterize defects within thin composite materials used for aerospace applications.
“I am working toward the development of a 3-D computational modeling technique that would allow for large-scale evaluation of composite structures using ultrasonic NDE methods,” Mull said. “My topic presented at NATO AVT was the progress I have made thus far regarding my research objectives.”
Mull further explained that he presented experimental and computational work, showing the impact different types of composite materials and processes can have on defect detection along with modeling challenges associated with current computational approaches.
The AVT-361 Technical Team arranged the Research Workshop (RWS) on Certification of Bonded Repair on Composite Aircraft Structures. The major scientific RWS topics concentrate on technology to support the certification of adhesive bonded repairs and more specifically the application of design features in order to comply with one of the Means of Compliance (MoC). This workshop covered 17 presentations, several of which were invited to represent industries, universities, research organizations and certification authorities.
