SafetyNet Information for Students

Clarkson is a community that cares. One of many available resources for student support is SafetyNet. A group of dedicated employees serve as the SafetyNet team to connect with students who are struggling with academic, health, personal, or other concerns. SafetyNet is managed by the Dean of Students with more than 20 campus partners providing individual student support.

SafetyNet is a simple and effective mechanism available to members of the Clarkson Community to offer support to students. Any member of the Clarkson Community is able to submit a SafetyNet referral with concerns about a student. In addition to self-referrals, SafetyNet referrals come from many sources, including professors, friends, RAs, coaches, roommates, supervisors, and advisors. Submitting information via SafetyNet mobilizes a response to your concerns quickly and appropriately by a committee functioning as a support team. When submitting a referral, please remember to include the student’s full name to ensure we reach out to the correct student.

SafetyNet typically receives more than 500 referrals each year. The goal of SafetyNet is to connect with students promptly to offer support and resources that will help them to recover from their situation. Please remember that SafetyNet is an excellent opportunity to support someone who needs it, but knowingly submitting a false referral takes away time from helping others.

Here are some of the topics that frequently get referred to SafetyNet:

  • Mental or physical illness
  • Substance abuse
  • Legal or safety concerns
  • Food or housing insecurity
  • Poor class attendance, missed quizzes, missed exams
  • Significant roommate, peer, or relationship conflict
  • Financial stress
  • Risk of failing a course
  • General academic, personal, social, or other concerns

Quick and easy access to complete the SafetyNet referral can be found on the Clarkson intranet’s Quick Links drop-down list as well as on the Moodle Help Hub.
